Wood Slat Wall – Part 1

Wood Slat Wall
After closing off the doors to the former office, this wall remained blank for months.  We knew the wall needed something, but wanted to do something special.  I’ve specified wood flooring on walls for some commercial projects and have seen other peel-and-stick products like stikwood, but I wanted to do something that looked like we put a little extra thought and effort into.

All the materials were purchased from our local big box hardware store:

I used select pine in alternating 1″x2″ and 1″x3″ pieces.  I chose select pine (it seemed the most economical) after testing some stains on a piece and liking the results.  I highly recommend using pre-stain wood conditioner for a more even stain (helps to prevent blotchiness).

Color test applications:

After selecting the stain (Minwax English Chestnut), I started prepping the wood.  This involved lightly sanding each piece (22) 1″ x 3″ and (24) 1″ x 2″ to expose the grain:
